Meet Morgane Baroghel-Crucq, the aix based artist expanding the world of visual art
Morgane Baroghel-Crucq is an award-winning textile artist, craftswoman, and entrepreneur based in Aix-en-Provence. After studying at ENSCI in Paris, she founded her own weaving studio 10 years ago. Her work seeks to capture landscapes and identities, creating a testament to a place and moment. Using plant, animal, and mineral based materials to encompass the elements that make up an environment. She is inspired by the ever-changing colors of Saint-Victoire, the famous mountain of Provence, France that once inspired Cezanne, and the endless possibilities that the medium of textiles offers. Working with clients like Cartier, Balmain, and SWADOH Selene.
Hearing Baroghel-Crucq speak about her work, struggles, and goals was such a unique and refreshing experience. Getting into the world of art was a process of continuous effort and taking every opportunity she could get her hands on. Baroghel-Crucq is always working towards making her art more innovative and reflective of herself. Getting materials that are as locally sourced as possible and reflective of her ancestry. She found out that some of her past relatives worked in the linen and silk businesses and wants to one day take up the challenge of creating her own thread. What was most evident in talking to Baroghel-Crucq was how passionate she was about creating and despite her successes and struggles, it was her passion that has always stayed with her.
The ACM Masters Form brought students into Baroghel-Crucq’s world of art, letting them see how an artist works, the transition from creation to sales, and allowing them to ask about questions most relevant to themselves. Like how to curate and organize an exhibition or what has helped her the most when it came to selling her art. Baroghel-Crucq is an artist as well as an entrepreneur, her perspective and experience in art and business are invaluable. This visit allowed students to explore what a career in art could look like and build connections for their future.
Currently Baroghel-Crucq is working with Gallifet Art Center, a contemporary art gallery located here in Aix-en-Provence. She curated an exhibition including 16 artists from France that share a focus on craftsmanship in a variety of mediums. Through this diverse group of material based artists she hopes to make a space for the more traditional art forms and show that they too can be considered fine art. Baroghel-Crucq is truly inspiring and offered so much perspective for my future. Be sure to see the exposition, open November 14th!
